Psalm 88 - A Petition to Be Saved from Death

Listen Later

A Petition to Be Saved from Death.

A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director; according to Mahalath Leannoth. A [a]Maskil of Heman [b]the Ezrahite.

88 O Lord, the God of my salvation,
 I have cried out by day and in the night before You.
 2 Let my prayer come before You;
 Incline Your ear to my cry!

-        A petition to be saved from death

o   A petition is a humble but urgent request

o   To be saved from death is the last request

-        A Song (to be remembered)

-        A Psalm of the sons of Korah (grateful worship leaders)

-        According to the

o   Mahalath (sickness, sad song, to writhe)

o   Leannoth (concerning sickness; to be sung in sickness)

-        A Maskil

o   A Jewish saying based on biblical knowledge experienced by a mature believer who knows the biblical truth to be so

-        Of Heman (faithful or wise man)

-        The Ezrahite (Born of the native; Son of the dawn; one born in the land with full citizenship rights)

-        Make a humble petition to be saved before you die, sing with a grateful heart, pray to be healed of our sickness’ according to a knowledge of God’s word, to the only faithful and wise man Jesus Christ, the Son of the dawn!

 3 For my soul has [c]had enough troubles,
And my life has drawn near to [d]Sheol.

-        This is a prayer of a weary soul who life is near death (maybe sick)

 4 I am reckoned among those who go down to the pit;
 I have become like a man without strength,
 5 [e]Forsaken among the dead,
Like the slain who lie in the grave,
Whom You remember no more,
And they are cut off from Your hand.

-        These are the words of a man who “feels like God has abandoned him”

-        It seems he has lost his faith even if temporarily (like God has cut him off)

6 You have put me in the lowest pit,
 In dark places, in the depths.

-        The man blames God for putting him in the lowest pit in dark places

-        Maybe because he knows he deserved it
