Psalm 90:12-17
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Moses wrote those words in Psalm 90 verse 12. They summarize what we need to know if we’re going to make our lives really count today. Listen to this prayer. “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” To begin with we live a day at a time. You and I do not number our days. We number our years. We have a birthday and someone says, “How old are you?” And you don’t tell them the number of days; that would only make it harder. You say, “Well, so many years,” and I hope you tell the truth. We don’t count our life in days. We count our life in years. But we better number our days because we live a day at a time.
“As thy days, so shall thy strength be” (Deuteronomy 33:25), “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). It is day by day that the universe functions. God has so ordained that this entire universe works a day at a time. You and I live a day at a time. We also live from the heart, from within. “So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). What we need to do is take care of the heart! That’s why Solomon wrote in Proverbs 4:23, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” What is in your heart is what will direct your life today. We live a day at a time and we live from the heart and we live by God’s wisdom. “So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Not just knowledge, wisdom. What is wisdom?
Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. Wisdom is knowing and having discernment so that we can apply the truth of the Word of God at the right time in the right way with the right motive. Where does that wisdom come from? The Word of God; getting to know God better; getting to know ourselves better. The Word of God teaches us. “So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Live a day at a time. Live as though this may be your last day. Ask God for the wisdom you need, and then apply it by faith.
