Psalm 91:1-8
We live in a dangerous world, and I wonder, where is the safest place in the world? Would it be a bomb shelter or a bank vault or perhaps a prison? Surrounded by an army? Where is the safest place in this world? Well, according to Psalm 91 verse 1 the safest place in the world is a shadow. “He who dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Verse 4, “He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” What does it mean to be under His wings in the secret place of the most high? Well, our first response is that under His wings refers to the mother hen who gathers her little chicks, covers them with her feathers. I don’t think that’s what our God is talking about here.
Where do we find a secret place that has wings? Well, we’re talking about the holy of holies in the tabernacle in the temple. The psalmist is saying, “Live in the holy of holies.” In the holy of holies of the tabernacle and temple the cherubim, those two cherubim, were over the mercy seat and their wings touched each other and when the psalmist talks about being in the secret place, he means the holy of holies. “Under His wings.” This means at the mercy seat where the blood was sprinkled there in the presence of the glory of God. The holy of holies was God’s throne. It was the place of God’s glory.
In other words, the safest place in the world is in fellowship with God. Not just visiting the holy place as the high priest did once a year, but dwelling in the holy place. According to Hebrews chapter 10 we have an open invitation to come right into the presence of God and dwell in the secret place under His wings at the mercy seat.
The mercy seat is the place where God meets with us. The mercy seat is the place where God’s glory is revealed. The mercy seat is the place where God gives us His guidance and shows us His will under the shadow of the Almighty. My shadow is not much protection for anyone, but when you are the Almighty, your shadow is a strong protection. Live in the holy of holies under the shadow of the Almighty.
