Psalm 92:7-15
Someone has said that there are three stages in life: childhood, adolescence and “my you’re looking good!” Well, I guess we can’t keep from getting older, but we can keep from allowing our lives to end in a swamp. No matter how old we grow we ought to keep on growing in the Lord. In fact, here’s what the psalmist has to say about growing old. Psalm 92 verses 12 through 14, “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those who are planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.” I am greatly encouraged by those words because as I get older, I want my life to count for the Lord Jesus Christ.
God tells me to be like a palm tree. That means I should be planted. “Planted in the house of the LORD.” He’s talking about people who abide in Christ, whose roots are in the spiritual. What a tragedy it is to get older and move into the world, move into sin and abandon those things that you were taught from the Word of God. Not only should we be planted, we should be productive. He says “they shall be fat.” He’s not talking about gaining weight. He’s talking about the fatness of the oil. The tree is rich. He’s talking about flourishing, fruitful trees to the glory of God. You know palm trees can stand a lot of abuse. Palm trees can stand a lot of storms and wind. The wind that breaks other trees just bends the palm tree down, and then it comes back up again. Palm trees have roots that go down to draw up the water in the desert area.
And they can survive when other trees are dying. And you know, palm trees just keep on producing fruit. They don’t diminish. The fruit gets better and sweeter. That’s the way it should be with us. We should be planted. We should be productive. We should be flourishing in the courts of the Lord. It would be a terrible thing to get old and get grouchy and mean and critical. Let’s not be like that. Let’s allow the Lord to make us fat and flourishing. Let’s be trees that have roots that go deep. We can stand the storms and we’re still fruitful, feeding others from the blessing of the Lord.
