In today’s lecture, we’ll dive into Perception, the cognitive process that allows us to interpret sensory inputs and make sense of our surroundings. Unlike simple sensation, perception involves selecting, organizing, and interpreting these stimuli to form a coherent understanding of the world. Our past experiences, context, and emotions all influence how we perceive things. Key theories, like Gibson's Ecological Theory, emphasize direct perception through environmental affordances, while Constructive Theory highlights the role of top-down processing where we use prior knowledge to interpret sensory inputs. Gestalt principles explain how we organize perceptions into meaningful patterns. Experiments, such as the Visual Cliff and Helmholtz’s Unconscious Inference, demonstrate the dynamic nature of perception, showing it is influenced by both innate and learned factors.
