Pt. 4 - THE TABLE OF FRIENDSHIP

Listen Later

This sermon contrasts the chaos of crowd-driven “mass hysteria” with the quiet, intimate, and deeply personal devotion found in John 12, where Mary anoints Jesus at a small dinner among friends. As Jesus’ ministry shifts from public spectacle to private preparation in the shadow of the cross, Mary uniquely recognizes His worth and the urgency of the moment, offering an extravagant, undignified act of worship by pouring out costly perfume, lowering her social dignity, and honoring Him fully. While others—especially Judas—criticize her actions as wasteful, Jesus defends her, revealing that her act is not only appropriate but prophetic, preparing Him for burial. The sermon emphasizes that true friendship with Jesus is marked by unrestrained, sacrificial devotion, challenging listeners to consider whether they are holding anything back from Christ or willing, like Mary, to give Him their very best without concern for appearances or cost.
