Pt 5: The Foolishness of Preaching

Listen Later

The Foolishness Of Preaching

1 Corinthians 1:17–25

Biblical Christianity has declined around the western world, the Bible largely rejected and preaching is scorned by many.

“Entertain me” is the new course of a flesh filled world. Dopamine is the new addiction of those who do not even realise they are addicted, and PREACHING does not cut it anymore.

YouTube Videos of 5 minutes or less get the most clicks by far. Short soundbites are ten times more popular than long-form interviews and a hundred times more popular than PREACHING.

Paul preached till the light of day in the book of Acts because of the spiritual hunger of many. Today sermonettes of 15 minutes length is the limit of the indulgence of many who call themselves Christian.

Sermonettes for Christianettes, the goats want to play and go their own way.

Yet it is through PREACHING than a man is saved.

It is through PREACHING that a man can grow.

Good preaching is the tool of infinite value in the mind of God, both to save man and to develop man to the purpose of God.

But many despise preaching, and so it is largely removed from the pulpits, replaced with story telling, “fables”.

2 Timothy 4:3–4

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

And yet our text tells us with all plainness that it is through “the foolishness of preaching” that man can come to know that eternal hope in Christ, why?

Because it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

We may even ask the question of WHY God has chosen such means? The answer is given us in verses 27-29

27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

 1 Co 1:27–29.

It is the Cross of Christ that we are to preach and it is the preaching of the cross that is to them that perish foolishness (v18), and while we do not negate the message, for it is the priority of all of Scripture, it is the method that seems particularly addressed in this passage of the Bible.

For It is by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

Preaching Is Priority For Benefit In All

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

We see in this verse the PRIORITY of the MINISTRY of Paul, it is not Baptism, but the preaching of the gospel.

So too it is for all those who are called to PREACH. Other ministry items they are indeed to attend to, as Paul did, BUT THIS IS NOT THAT FOR WHICH THEY ARE SENT.

The Church body has its role to care for ministry items, and the pastor is part of the church body BUT he is SENT (Ordained) to PREACH.

HIS CALLING is not the visiting of the sick, but the preaching of the gospel. Called not the caring for the poor, but the preaching of the gospel. Not the protesting against government, the promotion of good laws, the activism against evil laws and mores of a depraved society, but the preaching of the gospel.

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel:

If the Church valued the preaching of the gospel of Christ as much as God did, they would do all they could to NOT DISTRACT the Pastor from this work, FOR THE VALUE OF THE WORK IN GODS EYES IS INFINITE.

BECAUSE it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

PREACHING IS THE PRIORITY.

My wife does all she can not to distract me when I am preparing for this work of a Sunday morning. I have everything I need so that I can move into the work with a mind focused on the sermon.

Important issues that may need to be discussed, even a hint of it, waits until we return from the service.

We have members in the Church who wonderfully help to set up the area where the PREACHING will be attended to, so that the Pastor can have his focus undisturbed by serving tables”.

This was addressed in the first century also;

Turn to Acts 6

Acts 6:1–5

1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: …

The Church had the wisdom to understand the value of preaching, of the ministry of the word and the infinite value of their ministers dedicating themselves “continually to prayer“, so much so that “the saying please the whole multitude“. And so the Church chose men filled with the Spirit of God to “serve tables” (ie: minister in needed physical matters).

Paul continued and passed on this understanding to Timothy, and young man in the faith.

Turn to 1 Timothy 5 Again we see the Priority of Preaching for those who “labour in the word and doctrine”

1 Timothy 5:17–18

17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

So valuable is ministry of the WORD of God that those who labour well in “word and doctrine” are to be accounted as worthy of “double honour“. This is directly related to that which is his temporal “reward” in verse 18.

Why? Because Paul UNDERSTOOD the INFINITE VALUE OF THE WORD OF GOD and its need to be well preached.

Not only is preaching the PRIORITY to “save them that believe”, it is absolutely pivotal to “feed the flock of God”, why else does Paul employ the idiom of “muzzling the ox”?

He explains the priority of the church doing ALL THEY CAN to support this work in detail in 1 Cor 9

1 Corinthians 9:3–11

3 Mine answer to them that do examine me is this, 4 Have we not power to eat and to drink? 5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? 6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? 7 Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

8 Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? 9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? 10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. 11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

Sadly, while PREACHING IS THE PRIORITY IN THE CHURCH, the work of PREACHING is being MUZZLED in two forms these days.

The first is noted above; many pastors simply cannot AFFORD to spend time dedicated to the WORD and PRAYER as they cannot afford to “forebare working” (V6).

THE OTHER way Preachers are MUZZLED is by having them DISTRACTED to FOCUS on everything else BUT preaching.

Modern Churches give their pastors a set of KPI’s similar to those in buisiness circles, by which the Church can practically ‘measure the pastors performance’.

Key Performance Indicators:

How many sick has he visited?

How many baptisms has he done?

How many people has he directly served,

How much money has he encouraged to bring in?

How many people have visited and how many have stayed?

I know one pastor who is forced by his Church to attend so many meetings and to do so much in visitations that he complained he barely gets an opportunity to be diligent in “labouring in the word and in doctrine“.

The Church BODY is to attend to much of this.

Money in the bank does not serve the Church, keeping the PREACHER busy with peripherals does not serve the Church, doing all to SUPPORT GOOD PREACHING DOES.

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel:

Preaching Is Foolish To Some

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Apostate Churches and Christians around the world now reflect the views of “them that perish” and rather believe that “the cross of Christ” is of “none effect“. PREACHING IS FOOLISH to them.

They are not willing to learn the Gospel, to be convicted by the Gospel, and so many will use whatever excuse they can to limit PREACHING the Gospel.

Expository preaching of the word of God and especially the gospel of Christ is shunned by many. Yet Paul testifies that “the preaching of the cross” is a perfect demonstration of “the power of God“.

Earlier in Romans Paul wrote;

Romans 1:16

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

It is not though MANS wisdom. It is not through signs or wonders. It is through the preaching of the gospel of Christ that the power of God is manifest.

God teaches here that it will be that which the world considers foolish that will save mankind, for it is the Power of God unto salvation

Paul goes into greater detail in the next chapters for you to consider with me;

Turn to chapter 2

1 Corinthians 2:1–5

1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

How exciting is this even for you all beloved?

You do not need to worry yourself to have an elegant sounding phrase to capture the hearts of men, you do not need the wisdom of men, but only to know the cross of Christ, even as Paul to, “not know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” “not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect”

Now give diligent consideration to verse 18 in our passage and see how Satan has distracted from the priority of preaching today;

8 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Satan himself takes away the priority of PREACHING is his influence in modern translations of the Bible.

It is NOT the “Message of the Cross“, it is not the “Word of the cross” it is the “preaching of the cross“, the Greek word Logos has its priority meaning as the WORD SPOKEN or Preached.

The focus is the METHOD, not the MESSAGE in this passage.

We know this is right for the context before us does not lend its focus to what is preached, but PREACHING itself.

This is confirmed by what CORRUPT bible translations NEED to do to verse 21 to alter the POINT of the passage.

Verse 21 says plainly,

1 Corinthians 1:21

21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

Corrupt translations have ADDED the word “the message” or “what was”  after the word “foolishness”, reading “it please God by the foolishness of ‘the message’ (or “what was”) preached’ to save them that believe“.

Beloved, no Greek text justifies this addition of words.

Both the Received Text[1] used by the translators of the KJV AND the corrupt Nestle Alands Text[2] used by all modern translations, even the corrupt Hodges and Farstad Text[3] used to translate for the NKJ, read exactly the same way.

They ADD these words to justify the change of focus from the ‘method’ to the “message”.

This in itself TESTIFIES how Satan and the WORLD hates “PREACHING”, yet it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

And just when I thought I could take a breath on the heresy of modern translations I am also hit with the latter part of verse 18 where YET AGAIN another word is ADDED in Modern translations.

Our Bible is not ROMAN CATHOLIC BELOVED, there is no person in this world that is “being saved“.

The text says simply, but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Again, the word “BEING” is added in between “are” and “Saved” by modern translators.

It is not because the foundation texts they employ contain this additional word. I checked this verse in the Received Text[4] behind our KJV, the Nestle Aland[5] text behind almost all modern English versions, I again checked Hodges and Farstad[6] and I even checked source of the polluted versions, being the 1881 Westcott and Hort[7] greek text, and in this verse they ALL read exactly the same as the Received Text.

So why is the word “being” added in all modern translations?

Why do we suddenly see an indication that salvation is a PROCESS rather than a completed work?

Simply because it is a ROMAN CATHOLIC interpolation, an INSERTION into the text to give the impression that salvation is a PROCESS, and to eventually bring the PROTESTANT churches back to mother church.

Study the COUNTER REFORMATION and the Jesuit Order and you will come to understand what has occurred with modern versions of the Bible, especially in the Global language of the Last Days, English.

It angers me to have the need to explain this heresy, because it takes away from me the blessing of simply expounding that which is before our eyes. I am so sorry beloved.

It is PREACHING, PREACHING, PREACHING of the cross that has them that perish” believe it as “foolishness“.

There is little doubt they discard the “message” also, but every time we share the cross of Christ it is by preaching it, by PROCLAMATION.

We PROCLAIM, DECLARE, PREACH the truth of the word of God.

Those SAVED THROUGH IT, then understand “it is the power of God

PREACHING IS INDEED FOOLISH TO SOME.

Preaching Is Wisdom To Save

19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

This passage began in rebuke of those who follow after men,  “every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ” (v 12)

And so it is still to this day.

How many of you have regard to men who have letters before their names? You see the letters ‘D & R’ for “Doctor” and you just presume the man is rightly credentialed to preach the word!

You think that because he has endured the rigors of a modern education it naturally follows he is learned, rather than think the good Doctor was simply inDOCtrinated in DOCTRINES.

But such is the case today.

They learn the “DOCTRINES” they have been taught by the precepts of men, they no longer need to read the Bible.

Isaiah 29:13

13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

Now that they have  “the wisdom of the wise” they are good to go. But God says, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

Not only did Jesus have no regard for the WISE, the Scribes, Pharisees, Hypocrites, he condemned them above all the common people.

Turn to Matthew 23 to see how our Lord felt about such learned men.

Matthew 23:13–33

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! 17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?…

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess…..

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, 30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets….

33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

But God will

9 …destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

It is such wonderful interest to me that it is not the wise that hear the words of our Lord, it is the common people. It is not the learned, it is not the scribe, it is those with hearts desiring to hear the words of the Lord and rejoice.

I love the last portion of Mark 12:37,

Jesus finishes answering the scribes who would not hear him, and the passage concludes simply, “And the common people heard him gladly”

Preaching The Cross Is the Wisdom of God

22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

What man thinks he requires or seeks after is not the manner in which God can save man, but to preach the gospel of the cross of Christ is.

There are many today who think they themselves will give the conditions pertaining to their salvation. They think they will be the ones that will determine HOW or what manner by which they shall be saved.

If God would reveal himself THIS WAY, or if this happens in the next five minutes THEN Ill believe.

We’ve heard that all before haven’t we?

But if one comes unto me from the dead, then I will repent” (Edi version of Lk 16:30)

But God is not predisposed to save man according to his personal preferences and whims, because it it please’s God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

The text tells us that “the Jews REQUIRE a sign“. This we know is that which they have long desired.

We recall them seeking it directly of Jesus.

John 2:18

18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

John 6:30

30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

Matthew 16:1

1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.

And how did our Lord answer such questions?

John 2:19

19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

But in

Matthew 16:4

4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

What is it however that had continually motivated the people to “require a sign“?

Turn to

Exodus 4:1–9

1 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. 2 And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. 3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. 4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand: 5 That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee. 6 And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow. 7 And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh. 8 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign. 9 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.

It is through “the voice” of such “signs” that the Jew have determined to now “require” to affirm the works of God.

The Greeks however, sought after wisdom.

Paul was a learned man and he knew that the religion of the Greeks was that of Philosophy. It was Philosophy that rose to prominence in the 6th century BC, largely replacing the pagan worship of old times.

Philosophy is one of the five written ethical religions of the ancient world that rose to prominence a short while after the release of the captivity if the Jews in Babylon. This is one of the most interesting studies I attended to many years ago.

Zoroastrianism flourished around the 6th century BC when committed to writing, and was said to have begun by the Persian ideas of a man called Zarathustra (Zoroaster in Greek).[8]

Hinduism, though the most ancient pagan religion of those that follow, had a written ascetic or ethical revival in the early 5th century BC.[9]

Buddhism came out of Hinduism, rising to prominence, in the early 5th Century BC [10].

Confucianism began with the teaching of Confucius who is said to have lived in 551-479BC.[11]

Lastly, Philosophy, Socrates is the Greek philosopher that has the greater credit in the late 5th century BC, but it was Pythagoras in the mid 6th century BC who formulated principles that influenced the thought of Plato and Aristotle” [12]

The word “Philosophy” simple means “love of wisdom”.

 So therefore;

22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness

24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

GOD has determined that IT WILL NOT BE THROUGH such means that men shall be saved, but is shall be through THE FOOLISHNESS OF PREACHING the eternal Gospel of the Crucified Christ that man shall be saved!

PREACHING THE CROSS IS THE WISDOM OF GOD beloved, do not diminish HIS wisdom by a SOCIAL Gospel.

Do not play the fool by watering down the gospel.

Do not remove from the common people the wisdom of God by pandering to emotions either; not through music, not through philanthropy, not through compromise, not through ANY OTHER MEANS BUT through PREACHING and PROCLAIMING the Gospel of Christ.

ARE YOU SAVED?

If you are not saved, you stand yet in your sins and YOU ARE CONDEMNED ALREADY, your ONLY HOPE is to believe that God so loved you that he gave his only begotten son to die for your sins.

Are you too SMART to be saved? Has your intellect made you the ultimate fool? Do you “seek after wisdom”, “the foolishness of God is wiser than men“, it will be by the preaching of the cross that you will be saved.

The common people will hear it, it is to you that the gospel is sent.

Believe the gospel that you may be saved!
