As physical therapists we all know that for any condition a multimodal approach is better than using a single treatment method. We've heard it in school, have read it in CPGs, and new research is published every year studying this topic. But, why does it work? There are probably multiple mechanisms at play. The pain experience is multifactorial and a multimodal approach will happen to address each of these factors compared to a single modal approach. The studies that support a multimodal approach are also done on a large, varied sample. Not all of these patients will have the same impairments. A multimodal approach casts a large net and addresses all 'impairments'. Despite these proposed pros of a multimodal approach. we see some cons such as inefficiency in treatment and lack of relevant impairment identification specific to the individual. Join us today on the PT Good Podcast where we talk all things good, and bad, about the multimodal approach!
