Poems for the Speed of Life

PTLWB 33: "A Piper", by Seumas O'Sullivan

Listen Later

This is Episode 33 of Poems to Live Well By.

Today’s poem is A Piper by Seumas O’Sullivan.

Seumas O’Sullivan was an Irish poet and literary editor whose work covered the turbulent first half of the 20th century in Ireland, decades of uprising and independence, of civil war and the growing pains of a new country.

He was well acquainted with the Irish literary scene, being friends with — and sometimes showcasing the work of — the likes of James Joyce, WB Yeats and the young Patrick Kavanagh. This poem, “A Piper”, was later set to song by a number of composers, including Ivor Gurney and Michael Head. It is a simple but moving ditty on the power of music to stop us in our tracks and transport us, momentarily, to a place where we belong.
