Founded by immigrants from Bohemia in Europe, the settlement of Pūhoi was originally extremely isolated – leading to the phrase 'up the boohai' (a corruption of the town's name), meaning 'in the back of beyond'. Today the historic town is popular with visitors, and is known for its cheese production. Archival audio sourced from Radio New Zealand Sound Archives, http://www.soundarchives.co.nz/.
