It's called Attu! The western most part of the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska. The weather is always terrible. It was barely inhabited. Yet Japan attacked and took the island in 1943.

It's the true story of two soldiers, one who was an established surgeon in Los Angeles who was drafted when he returned to Japan for a family emergency.

The other was a soldier named Laird from Ohio, who ends up on a mission to get the island back. 

A diary is found after the death of the surgeon and a little book filled with names of friends and relatives in the U.S. 

After decades of nightmares Laird sets out to find the daughter of the man he killed, a man whose heart is in savings lives, and wanting to return to live a life in the U.S. 

It's a fantastic book, highly research and a real winner for Mark Obmascik.
