  • We Can't Believe It! | Pull Party #45

The Green Lantern fandom is fighting in the comments, Marvel keeps testing our patience, and Mattel just showed up ready to throw hands with McFarlane. Welcome to Pull Party #45, where the comic book takes are questionable, the language is worse, and nobody is leaving without an argument.

Robert and Paul are back for another gloriously unhinged comic book podcast, and this time there's a LOT to get through.

    πŸ’š THE LANTERNS FINALE DEBATE

Was Lanterns a great TV show with a disappointing Green Lantern adaptation, or did the finale completely drop the ball? We dig into the community's comments, debate the show's lack of Green Lantern action, discuss John Stewart and Guy Gardner, and ask the question that apparently starts fights: if you're making a Green Lantern show, shouldn't we actually get some Green Lantern stuff?

πŸ¦‡ NEW YORK COMIC CON ANNOUNCEMENTS

We break down the comic book news that caught our attention, including Absolute Justice League, new DC Black Label possibilities, Grant Morrison writing James Bond for IDW, and upcoming Marvel projects. Plus, we discuss whether Marvel's comics, movies, games, and TV shows are losing their way.

πŸ’₯ MATTEL VS. McFARLANE: ABSOLUTE UNIVERSE FIGURES

Mattel came out swinging with its Absolute Batman, Absolute Catwoman, Absolute Flash, and Absolute Hawkman figures. We compare the designs, talk accessories and build-a-figure Absolute Bane, and debate which toys actually deserve space on the shelf.

    πŸ“¦ WHAT'S IN THE BOX?!

Our friend Ryrit sent us mystery boxes, and naturally, we have absolutely no idea what we're doing. We're opening vintage 1992 Wolverine trading card packs, talking collectible cards, and discovering what happens when comic book nerds get their hands on mystery packages.

🎨 DIGITAL ART, COMIC BOOK HISTORY & MORE

We also talk about traditional versus digital comic art, drawing tablets, gaming save files, and whether modern technology has actually made creating comics easier.

And because this is Pull Party, we somehow end up discussing Wolverine's origin, Weapon X, Apocalypse, Magneto's history, and the importance of preserving the stories behind iconic comic book characters.

Drop your thoughts in the comments. Was the Lanterns finale actually good? Is Marvel losing you, too? And are you Team Mattel or Team McFarlane?Subscribe for more comic book news, reviews, collecting, creator interviews, and two nerds arguing about fictional people like they're real.

  • Justice For Earl | Pull Party #44

Welcome back to Pull Party: A Comic Book Podcast β€” where the comics are questionable, the opinions are worse, and apparently we still have to settle the R2-D2 speech bubble debate.

This week, Robert and Paul talk about everything from Supergirl and Lanterns to Star Wars, comic collecting, convention experiences, and the absolute insanity of modern comic book variants.

Paul breaks down his recent Tyler Kirkham experience at Gotham City, including signed books, blind bags, Absolute Batman, Spider-Man #1000, Final Boss, and the hunt for The Max. We also get into the eternal question: how much is too much to spend on a comic book?

Plus subscriber milestones, mysterious packages, questionable decisions, and several arguments nobody asked for.

If you like comic books, comic collecting, DC, Marvel, Star Wars, Green Lantern, Batman, or two idiots arguing about things that absolutely do not matter, you're in the right place.

  • B. Clay Moore: Vampires and Packages | Pull Party Presents

    B. Clay Moore joins Pull Party for a ridiculously long conversation about comics, creator ownership, Hollywood, Image Comics, Ignition Press, and pretty much everything else his brain can connect together.

Clay has been writing comics professionally since the early 2000s, with credits including Hawaiian Dick, The Leading Man, Billy Smoke, Bloodland, and Dispatched. We talk about how Hawaiian Dick found its way to Image Comics, the early days of Image's creator-owned resurgence, working around Marvel and DC, and what it actually takes to keep a career in comics going.

We also get into Ignition Press and the philosophy behind building an actual comic book company instead of simply treating comics as a pipeline for movie and TV adaptations. B. Clay talks about creator ownership, working with other creators, finding the right artists, pitching comics, and why making a good comic has to come first.

And then there are the stories.

Hollywood adaptations. San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel. DC. Bad comic pitches. Hawaiian Dick's long history of being optioned. And, somehow, Hogan's Heroes.

It's a very Pull Party conversation.

  • Shark Bottles & Comic Books | Pull Party #43

    We have a problem.

There is a mysterious purple car hiding in Last Driver #2, and we have absolutely no fucking idea what it is.

That's where we're ending this week's Pull Party, but naturally we had to spend the previous two hours talking about basically everything else in comics first.

We talk Lanterns, Hal Jordan's dad, the Jordan family curse, Gambit, the latest Absolute books, Absolute Batman turning Scarecrow into the goddamn boogeyman, and Absolute Wonder Woman #24 bringing some serious fear-god bullshit into the mix.

We also get into Dispatch #3, a very dark Joan of Arc story involving Corpse Knight and the very real Gilles de Rais, and somehow end up talking about the historical bullshit we were all taught as kids.

Then Sean Murphy's Last Driver #2 steals the show.

The book is loaded with ridiculous attention to detail and a two-page garage spread packed with famous vehicles. We've got the Keaton Batmobile, the General Lee, the Ecto-1, Knight Rider, the DeLorean, a Back to the Future vehicle, and apparently at least one car that has completely defeated us.We also get distracted by Mystery Men, old X-Men trading cards, Batman Beyond, the Arkham games, South Park, variant-cover insanity, and a whole lot of bullshit that probably wasn't on anybody's bingo card.

And then, because apparently the universe wanted a perfect ending...Paul's power goes out.

    The lights flicker.

    The recording dies.

And now we have our cover art.

    Welcome to Pull Party.

  • DNX Is Gonna Give It To Yah | Pull Party #42

Batman Day has come and gone, and Paul is celebrating the only way he knows how: spending a stupid amount of money on comics, rocking a foil Batman mask, and getting happy with blind bags.

Welcome back to Pull Party: A Comic Book Podcast! Robert and Paul are back for episode 42, and things get gloriously unhinged. We're talking Batman Day pickups, ridiculous comic book deals, and DNX blind bags.Paul shows off his Batman Day haul, including Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham and a whole lot of dollar-bin nonsense. After the comic book chaos, we're breaking down Lanterns Episode 6 with major spoilers.

We get into Hal Jordan's past, John Stewart's family drama, Guy Gardner's ring, Sinestro's escape, the consequences of the Green Lanterns' past, and all those DC Universe connections. Plus, we debate James Gunn's approach to DC continuity, dig into Green Lantern lore, and argue about what makes a grounded superhero story work. And, of course, we get sidetracked into Batman's copyright lawyers, Darkwing Duck, comic book movie hot takes, and the Rupert Thorne/Carmine Falcone slander situation.

    WARNING: Lanterns spoilers ahead!

  • Pure Science! | Pull Party #41

Paul and Robert are back for Pull Party Episode 41, and apparently Batman's cape has become a matter of SCIENCE.

We kick things off with a heated argument over Kevlar, John Wick's ridiculous bulletproof suit, Batman's cape, and whether comic book physics deserves to be taken seriously. Spoiler: it absolutely does when Robert has a book about the science behind Batman sitting on his shelf.

Then we get into Lanterns episodes 4 and 5, including the big Zoe Macon reveal, Manhunters, William Hand, Hector Hammond, Anton, the mysterious "Guardian," and Paul's increasingly unhinged theory that the mysterious Guardian is actually a Weaponer of Qward who is going to create the Yellow Ring for Sinestro.

    PUT IT ON THE BOARD.

We also talk about badass women in the DC universe, Gotham's extremely questionable version of the Penguin, Creature Commandos, The Penguin, and why Colin Farrell might be the best Penguin yet.

And finally, Paul puts Robert's comic book knowledge to the test with an alter-ego guessing game featuring Bruce Wayne, Wilson Fisk, Billy Batson, Danny Rand, Francisco Ramon, Robert Reynolds, Donald Blake, and plenty of opportunities for Robert to realize he doesn't know nearly as much as he thought he did.

Basically: Batman, Lanterns, Kevlar, Sinestro, Manhunters, Penguin, and two idiots arguing about comic books for an hour.

  • Big Boy! | Pull Party #40

Episode 40, bitch. And somehow Paul actually got a Lanterns theory right, so naturally we're going to spend entirely too much time talking about it. We also tear into the new Teen Titans #1, fall in love with Wildcard, question why Red Hood is apparently doing freelance detective work in Seattle, and discuss whether Nightwing is just getting dragged into everybody else's bullshit.

Then we've got Doom Patrol, Batman, Bloodland, Dispatched, Bad Thoughts, Daredevil, Deadpool, Judge Dredd, old-school sci-fi movies, South Park, and approximately seventeen arguments that absolutely did not need to happen. Plus: Batman's bulletproof cape, Big Boy, vampire baby murder, Electra stealing Daredevil's wardrobe, and Paul's continuing crusade against anything that looks remotely like modern CGI.

  • Pull Party Presents | Austin Allen Hamblin: Big Guns, Stupid Rednecks, and Other Bad Decisions

We sat down with comic writer and all-around comic nerd Austin Allen Hamblin to talk about his new book Big Guns, Stupid Rednecks.

Austin talks about growing up in rural Iowa, discovering comics through Fantastic Four and Jack Kirby, meeting Phil Hester when he was only ten years old, and eventually going from asking Hester how to make comics to actually working with him. That's about as full-circle as it gets.

We also get into the 10-year struggle to get Big Guns, Stupid Rednecks published, the importance of comic shops, self-publishing, Kickstarter, conventions, and why sometimes you just have to keep beating on the door until somebody finally lets you in.

    Then things get weird.

We talk about Smile If You Farted, Adventures of Punk and Rock, wrestling comics, redneck movies, tractors, FFA, high school journalism, the scrambled cable channels and the Jehovah's Witness.

And because this is Pull Party, we eventually abandon the topic completely and start talking about Lanterns, Peacemaker, James Gunn, Batman Forever, Fantastic Four, Amalgam Comics, and why Ben Grimm is one of the greatest comic book characters ever created.

Oh, and Austin leaves us with the only piece of advice you really need:

    Don't be a dick.

Honestly, that's probably the most important thing we discussed.

Go buy Big Guns, Stupid Rednecks. Support indie comics. Support comic shops. And maybe don't tell the Jehovah's Witnesses where you live.

About Pull Party: A Comic Book Podcast

From the publisher's feed

A weekly conversation about all things comics. We review the pulls of the week, what we are reading, and what we are excited for. Paul is a seasoned comic nerd and Robert is just now living his best life in comics. Just as a fair warning, you probably shouldn't listen around your kids. :)
