The day before my 12th birthday, it came from behind without warning.

I blacked out. I climbed a fence I shouldn’t have been able to climb. Blood everywhere. Somebody had to run and tell my mom.

That was the first time something tried to kill what I was building before I even knew I was building it.

It wasn’t the last.
