Episode 15 - Pulsing Black While Crossing - George Davis III and Yoweri Kimeria showcase great pride in their brotherhood in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated (ΑΦΑ). They share the emphasis of service, advocacy for our communities and the rich history and legacy of the many former members who have paved the way for younger generations to be part of such an amazing brotherhood.

GEORGE - “I INSTANTLY AT 14, FELT THIS INSTANTANEOUS CONNECTION TO THE IMPORTANCE OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND SPECIFICALLY COLLEGES THAT WERE MEANT TO EDUCATE AND TO PREPARE BLACK LEADERS.”

YOWERI - “COMING FROM KENYA, GREEK LIFE IS NOT A THING. THERE IS NO LEGACY, THERE ARE NO FAMILIAL TIES TO GREEK LIFE IN AMERICA. WHEN I WENT TO COLLEGE I WANTED TO LEARN WHAT THE GREEK SITUATION IS.”

Episode 14 - Pulsing Black With Family - Rachelle McKissick-Harris and BeAnka Masafiade take us on an endearing and long journey of how they met their husbands of different Black ethnicities to each of them. They compared their familial journeys and how they helped their husbands understand what it meant to be Black in America.

BEANKA MASAFIADE - “IT HAS BEEN A JOURNEY OF EDUCATION AND LEARNING TOGETHER - FIRST HAND EXPERIENCES OF THOSE CULTURES AND BE HUMBLE.. WE HAVE TO REALIZE WE ARE CREATING OUR OWN STORY.”

Episode 13 - Pulsing Black While Moving - Janella Elder and Emma Ombogo bring us into their world as dancers and give a cross-cultural Black perspective on the evolution of their love for dance.Their experiences showcase how  performing arts are deeply interwoven into the social and healing fabric of Black Culture.

JANELLA - “MY FIRST DANCE PERFORMANCE WAS ACTUALLY TAP. I WAS THE ONLY PERSON THAT LOOKED LIKE ME IN THE ROOM AND BECAUSE I LIKED BALLROOM, I WENT IN THERE, DANCED AND THE PERSON HOSTING WAS LIKE ‘YEAH, I WANT HER TO BE MY PARTNER.’ “

EMMA - “I WASN’T SURE DANCE WAS A THING FOR ME AFTER BEING AWAY FROM IT FOR SO LONG. AS I HAVE GROWN IN THE FITNESS INDUSTRY, ITS HELPED MY WEIGHT, BUILDING MUSCLE, ITS DEFINED MY BODY IN VARIOUS WAYS.”

Episode 12 - Pulsing Black While On Campus - Sylvia Nuamuhungu and Kiléya DeBarge discussed the interactions and experiences of Black students on the college campus scenes. They highlighted the difference between the college experience pre- and post-covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions on the socialization of students on campus.

SYLVIA - “I AM LEARNING MORE AND MORE AND THAT THE BIGGER PERSON IS THE ONE THAT COMES OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE TO INCLUDE OTHERS AND EVEN APOLOGIZE. EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOU COME FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS, BE INTENTIONAL TO INCLUDE AND INVITE OTHERS. BE THERE FOR EACH OTHER..”

KILEYA - “THE PEOPLE THAT AFFIRM MY BLACKNESS ARE MY BOSSES AND ME. I DO IT WITH MY PERSONALITY. I DO NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO AFFIRM OR PICK FOR ME. I AM NOT GOING TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE FOR YOU.”

Episode 11 - Pulsing Black While Building Capital - Anne Mburu and Dondreá Brown take money matters to the next level in this episode that centers the relationship that both of them had with money growing up. They detail the work they do to ensure that the Black community continues to pursue financial literacy and diversifying their investments.

DONDREÁ - “FINANCES ARE EVERYWHERE. WHY NOT HAVE FUN WITH IT? WE SHOULD EDUCATE OUR KIDS ON HOW TO MANAGE THEIR MONEY WELL; ENCOURAGE THEM USING THE ACRONYM P.E.D. -  PARTICIPATE, EDUCATE AND DEMONSTRATE. BE HANDS ON WITH THEM.”

ANNE - “I HAVE FOUND MYSELF HAVING TO GO AHEAD AND TRY TO EDUCATE OUR COMMUNITY ON THE IMPORTANCE OF DOING A BUDGET. BUDGETING IS VERY IMPORTANT. YOU HAVE TO FACTOR EVERYTHING IN. I USE THE FORMULA 30-30-10-10.”

Episode 10 - Pulsing Black With Therapy - Rebecca Spann and Dr. Gaynel Nave address the subject of mental health and how therapy is viewed in the Black community. Intergenerational trauma is discussed and various ways to seek the culturally-inclusive support that people (and their families) need are shared.

REBECCA - “AT ONE POINT WE DIDN’T HAVE OWNERSHIP OF PRIVATE PRACTICES, OR WE WEREN’T AT CERTAIN TABLES TO MAKE DECISIONS ON BEHALF OF PEOPLE OF COLOR. I AM HUGE WITH THE WORD ‘ADVOCACY’ AND I EMPOWER MY CLIENTS TO ADVOCATE FOR THEIR HEALTH.”
