Connect Before You Correct
In this episode, James Inman shares how Still Creek Ranch uses trauma-informed care to help children from hard places begin to heal.
One of the biggest principles is simple, but powerful:
Connect. Empower. Correct.
Too often, adults try to correct behavior before relationship has been built. But for children who have experienced trauma, authority has often been connected to fear, failure, rejection, or harm.
So correction without connection can feel unsafe.
James shares a real example of a child who became overwhelmed over something as simple as being asked to pick up laundry. Instead of meeting that moment with punishment first, he slowed down, sat beside her, used playful engagement, rebuilt connection, and helped her redo the moment in a healthier way.
That is not ignoring behavior.
That is teaching a child how to regulate, reconnect, and respond differently.
At Still Creek, the goal is not just behavior management.
The goal is healing.
