Gabriella Bedor and I both learned in the Big Four what it means to show up with discipline and commitment. Today she is a senior HR executive, and what struck me in our conversations is how little distance there is between who Gabby is and how she leads.
Those values started at home. Her father ran a stonemason, marble and tile business for 40 years. When she told him about a long day, he would ask, "Did you put in time, or did you work?" And he lived by one rule: you are a man of your word, or you have nothing. If he promised you a bottle of his homemade wine, it might take a month, but it came. Decades later, people who once worked for him still visit him at 85 to say thank you.
That is where Gabby's sense of integrity comes from. When someone once asked her whether she valued integrity or loyalty more, her answer was simple: "If you don't have the integrity, how can you have loyalty?"
We talk about integration too. Gabby doesn't think in terms of work-life balance. She thinks about work-life integration, and about being the same person at work that she is at home. As she sees it, it is far harder to be someone you are not than to simply be yourself, even knowing not everyone will like it.
She takes real pride in that authenticity, and she treats integrity as a discipline. Showing up in integrity with her values means doing the work: sitting down to write a handwritten note to every one of the 380 people in her organization, picking up the phone instead of sending an email, and protecting someone's dignity on their last day.
And it means living in alignment. Gabby believes too many people try to fit the mold around them instead of their own. When you live in integrity with your values, you don't fit someone else's mold. You create your own.
Your Word Is Your Word.
Gabby's story is a reminder that values are not what we write on the wall. They are who we are, at home and at work, when we keep our word.
About Gabriella Bedor

She began her career at a grocery store, joined PricewaterhouseCoopers through an internship program, and spent much of her career there before moving into HR leadership. When I met Tom Johnston in Omaha at the ROI of Why Conference, the first thing I noticed was his quiet and calm presence. I immediately felt myself open up, and I really wanted to learn more. I felt like I had met a kindred spirit, and we shared several great conversations. We reconnected a few weeks later in Boulder, and since then Tom has become a good friend, mentor and catalyst in my own life.
In our conversation, we get into the life and daily practice behind that grounded presence - including what Tom and his wife Molly are learning about caring for the relationship they're building together. Not just in the big decisions, but in the everyday moments when something as small as toast can turn into an argument.
As Tom says, "we're not arguing about toast."
He talks openly about learning to recognize what he's bringing from past relationships into the one he's in now. Taking a breath. Giving himself some compassion. Remembering that he gets to choose how he responds to the person he loves.
That's also the work he brings to leaders and teams: helping people become more aware of themselves and one another, so they can show up with greater care, curiosity and intention.
Pause. Notice. Choose.
And Tom is able to do this because it's his daily practice. The man I met in Omaha, reconnected with in Boulder, and have formed such a quick bond with is helping others by practicing what he teaches.
Tom Johnston is Founder and CEO of Talent Optimizer Group and a Bloom Growth Coach. He helps founders and leadership
teams build people-first organizations, align people strategy with business priorities, and create operating systems that

The Transformation Economy: Guiding Customers to Achieve Their Aspirations - B. Joseph Pine II - https://store.hbr.org/product/the-transformation-economy-guiding-customers-to-achieve-their-aspirations/10814
Tom references Pine's work while reflecting on transformation, value and the difference organizations can make in people's lives.
For much of our lives, progress can look like moving faster: achieving the next goal, advancing in our career, earning recognition, and becoming the person we believe we are supposed to become.
Danielle Feyerman knows that journey well.
In this episode of Purpose @ Work, Danielle and Jerry explore the experience beneath achievement — the internal stories, expectations, and need for validation that can quietly shape the way we live and work.
Danielle reflects on learning to slow down, trust herself, become more present, and turn inward rather than continually looking outside herself for the next answer.
The conversation is an invitation to see purpose less as a destination we race toward and more as a relationship with ourselves that continues unfolding throughout our lives.

Welcome to the first episode of the Purpose @ Work podcast!
I met Matt Domyancic at Awaken, Illuman's annual men's gathering. I was there participating and leading embodiment practices, and Matt was on a panel talking about the Warrior archetype. By almost any conventional measure, Matt knows that archetype well. He was a high-achieving athlete, played college football,
became a police officer and SWAT operator, and built a career helping people perform in high-stress environments. I recognized a lot
of myself in that part of his story. But what really caught my attention was the way Matt talked about his parents - particularly his dad. In a room where a lot of men
were exploring the wounds they carried from their fathers, Matt spoke with deep love and reverence for the discipline, honor and respect his father had modeled for him. In our conversation, Matt explores what happens when the qualities that helped us succeed - discipline, intelligence, willpower and work ethic - can no longer solve the problem in front of us.
As Matt says, "you cannot outwork the problem."
Sometimes the courageous thing isn't pushing harder. It's taking your foot off the gas. Becoming present enough to notice what is happening in your body. Asking for help. Caring for yourself. Allowing someone else to hold up the mirror.
The Courage to Slow Down.
Matt's story isn't about leaving the warrior behind. It's about discovering what the warrior becomes when strength makes room for presence, relationship and love.

Purpose @ Work is a series of conversations about the moments that ask us to become someone new. Host Jerry Thompson talks with guests about the stories we inherit around success, work and leadership, and what happens when those stories stop serving us.
Across the conversations, the throughline moves from reflection toward possibility, asking what it looks like to live, lead and create from a place of real alignment rather than inherited expectation.
This show is for anyone questioning whether the path they're on is still the right one, and who wants real conversations rather than easy answers.
