Welcome to the Table

Purposeful Pain

Listen Later

Pain is the thing you would most like God to take away. And when he does not take it when you ask, it starts to feel like either he does not care or something is wrong with your faith. Nobody told you that the suffering might be intentional — that it might actually be doing something in you that nothing else can.

The New Testament does not treat suffering as a spiritual malfunction. James says to count it joy. Paul says he has learned contentment in all circumstances. Peter says the trials prove the genuineness of your faith. The pattern is consistent: suffering is one of God's most effective formation tools, when you know what it is for.

This episode explores the theology of purposeful pain — what the Bible says about suffering, why difficulty is not evidence of God's absence, and how Christians can endure hardship without losing hope or their sense of God's goodness. This episode explains why suffering is not a sign that God has abandoned you, but one of the primary means by which he forms Christlike character, hosted by two pastors.

You will learn the theological framework for understanding why God allows pain and what he intends to produce through it. You will hear how to hold grief and faith at the same time without letting one destroy the other. You will walk away with a different posture toward the pain you are currently carrying.

This episode will not take your pain away. But it will change what you believe your pain is for — and that changes everything about how you carry it.
