In this passage, Paul addresses what a Christian’s mind and heart is fixed on and how this impacts the way you live and how you treat others. He describes that those who have been raised with Christ first have been baptized into Christ. Through repentance the believer is dead to sin and raised to life by the Spirit. We are to die to our old self, but God doesn’t leave us dead. He raises us up to newness of life and transforms us. Paul calls our attention to what we desire and think about. We are to seek the things that are above, not earthly things. Fix your eyes on Christ. The act of seeking depends on what you set your mind, heart and affections on. We will seek whatever we set our heart on. What is your highest love? What do you desire above all else? Put to dead what is earthly in you--sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and covetousness. Present yourself to God in order to put sin to death. Have no other gods before God. What you set your mind on is going to be reflected in what you speak. This shows the condition of your heart. A relationship with Christ will change all human relationships. Reconciliation is only possible through the power of Christ. Be compassionate, kind, humble, meek and patient with other Christians. We have all been saved by the same grace. Have a tender, kind heart. This is a fruit of the Spirit. Let God fill you with the fruits--you can’t create them on your own. See what Christ has done for you so you can bear with one another. The Lord has forgiven you so you can forgive others. Put on love then above all else. Whatever you love above God, lay it down before Him.
