Putting Einstein to the test

Listen Later

Neutron stars are amazing objects, with more than a solar mass of matter crammed into a ball the size of a city. Light-house-like radio beacons from many of these objects allow us to observe them as radio pulsars. When a pulsar orbits another neutron star or a white dwarf, opportunities open up for verifying the predictions of Einstein's theory of General Relativity. Ingrid will show how these state-of-the-art tests of relativity are achieved, and anticipate what might be accomplished with systems hoped to be discovered using new powerful radio telescopes. Professor Ingrid Stairs was invited to Swinburne under the Board of Research Visiting Professor Grant Scheme, and this lecture was presented as part of the PVC(R) Visiting Professor Lecture Series.
