On March 27th, Suncor reported a tar sands oil spill into the St. Clair River, a 40-mile long waterway that connects Lake Huron to Lake St. Clair, the largest freshwater delta in the world. The refinery receives its oil via Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline, which is processed in Sarnia, Ontario. We have been closely monitoring this situation, and since the oil has contaminated our drinking water, Suncor and Shell have deployed booms to try to recapture the oil. However, the St. Clair River has strong currents, meaning booms will only collect what floats on the surface. The majority of the oil will inevitably flow into Lake St. Clair and then into the Detroit River, which provides drinking water for approximately 700,000 people.
