A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.

General Douglas MacArthur was a great leader in World War I and II. One of only five men to rise to the rank of General of the Army, he also was a leader at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

I believe that General MacArthur was a true leader and that he possessed the the 3 Traits of which he quotes:

* The Confidence to Stand Alone

* The Courage to Make Tough Decisions

* The Compassion to Listen to the Needs of Others

These three C's; Confidence, Courage and Compassion make the fourth C, the Character of a True Leader.

According to General MacArthur, and I tend to agree, you don't set out to be a leader. It isn't a goal one would set, or a degree you would try to earn, but a true leader becomes one first by the equality of his actions and by the integrity of his intent.

The Equality Of His Actions, The Integrity of His Intent,  let's look at these. What is he saying here? The true leader's traits speak what leaders DO to become leaders.

The true leader listens to their charges, their followers. They listen to their needs and has empathy for those needs. The true leader also has confidence in themselves and their actions to stand alone if they need to. Sometimes, making tough decisions aren't what everyone wants. As a leader, your actions must be based on the best for all, what achieves the goals of the all. The integrity of the intent of your actions is what determines the best decisions.

Do the people that work for you, with you think of you as a leader? Is the intent of your actions in line with the 3 Traits of a True Leader?
