QPP006: 1977, A Space Odyssey - Episode IV 40th Anniversary Review

Listen Later

Welcome back to the only Star Wars podcast that used to bullseye womp rats in our T-16 back home! Today is the 40th anniversary of Star Wars - on this day in 1977 audiences were first introduced to the galaxy far, far away. Chris & Patrick continue their series of movie reviews with this timeless classic, known then as Star Wars, known now as Episode IV: A New Hope.

We talk about our initial reactions to the movie and how they've changed; the plot and characters; technical aspects and presentation; and the film's overall contribution to the Star Wars franchise. Since there would be no franchise without this film, we forego our typical final discussion to consider: do we love this film for its own merits, or because of the greater epic universe that was built around it?

Along the way, we discuss:

  • how Rogue One impacts this film now
  • why Luke is so bloody whiny
  • if the "Han shot first" controversy is worth all the attention it gets
  • how much R2-D2 really knows
  • why the original lightsaber duel was so slow
  • how 2001: A Space Odyssey echoes Lucas
  • the importance of droids wandering strange desert planets
  • what the Special Editions actually did right

... and much more! Thanks for listening, and may the Fortieth be with you!

This is the second installment in our series of movie reviews. Last month we discussed Rogue One, and next we'll take a look at The Empire Strikes Back.
