Qualities to Consider on Mother's Day (Tom Pound)

Listen Later

1. This week we stopped everything and focused entirely on moms. Our focus on moms was rooted in this scripture, Colossians 3:12-14 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. ¹³ Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. ¹⁴ And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. What stands out to you from the Scripture? This passage lists seven qualities that should be present in Christian relationships: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love. Each of these qualities is seen in the life of Christ. Which of these qualities do you struggle to live out? Which of them comes easily to you?

2. The first two qualities, compassion and kindness, work together. Compassion is the emotion you feel and kindness is the expression of that emotion. One without the other would be a bit sad. To feel compassion and not act with kindness would seem hollow and incomplete. To act with kindness but not experience compassion would seem insincere. Tell a story of a time when you received compassionate kindness from an unexpected source. Do you desire to be more compassionate and act with kindness more often? If you’re married, how does this play out with your spouse? If you’re a parent, how does this play out with your children? How might you increase the amount of compassion you feel and kindness that you express?
3. The third quality that we focused on is patience. Patience is the capacity to accept delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset. As you reflect on that definition, do you need more patience? In what area of your life are you most likely to lose patience? The Bible often speaks of the importance of patience and outlines ways to become more patient. Proverbs 19:11 A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense. As we gain wisdom, we become more patient. Why do you think wisdom and patience affect each other? Patience is also given to us through the Holy Spirit. Colossians 1:10-11 … live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, ¹¹ We also pray that you will be strengthened with all His glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. What are your thoughts on this verse? Have you ever felt strengthened by God’s power, resulting in more endurance and patience? If so, tell that story to your group.
