A Dog Called Diversity

Queer women in the workplace….with Gemma Saunders

Listen Later

I hope you will enjoy listening to Gemma Saunders as much as we did. From her beautiful acknowledgement of country to her story of coming out, she has a beautiful way of describing the world.

She talks about coming into herself, meeting her wife and having her children, and how she loves heading off with her wife and kids in their caravan (listen to learn why).

We talk through:

  • The process of two women having children through IUI and IVF, including how they decided who would carry the baby,
  • How she supports Minus 18, Australia's charity improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth
  • Women in the workplace, in particular why there are so few gay women “out” and,
  • Why she started her own Diversity & Inclusion consultancy Workplace Edit

I loved at the end how she explained what might be useful if you want to work in Diversity and Inclusion. These were:

  • Human centred design and accessible design,
  • Understanding the legal context and compliance frameworks in the areas you are working in,
  • Being data savvy, and
  • You don’t have to be in a formal role to make change in D&I.
