Chapter 3 Summary :

Dr. Lana Harding, a leading expert in behavioral psychology and professor at the University of Chicago, is asked to analyze surveillance footage provided by the Chicago Police Department. The video captures nine young men—previously law-abiding—erupting into sudden violence after a sporting event. Using her keen observational skills, Lana isolates the inciting moment: a minor accidental push that escalates into full-blown mob behavior. Her analysis offers insight into how quickly collective aggression can ignite from a simple emotional trigger, reflecting her deep understanding of human behavior.

As Lana prepares to report her findings, Paul Barker, the University of Chicago’s president, unexpectedly arrives at her office with a mysterious visitor: James Fisher, a government official. Paul introduces them and then discreetly exits, leaving Lana to learn that the President of the United States has ordered her immediate participation in a top-secret government project.

Lana is given no choice in the matter.
