QUESTION 30: WHY DO PEOPLE USE DIFFERENT MEDITATION APPROACHES YET STILL BEING ABLE TO ANCHOR THE MIND?

ANSWER: Meditative approaches and effort can be categorized into two types: correct practice and incorrect practice.

1.    When Practicing Correctly:

With Sufficient Merit: If one follows a correct meditation method and has accumulated enough merit, the mind will naturally enter deep meditative absorption (Jhana or Samadhi).

With Little Merit and Heavy Karmic Burden: If one follows the correct method but lacks sufficient merit or carries a heavy karmic burden, progress may be slow or stagnant. In such cases, meditators face two possible reactions:

•      Confusion and Discouragement - Some may lose faith and abandon the practice.

•      Unwavering Determination - Others remain steadfast in their chosen path.

2.    When Practicing Incorrectly:

With Little Merit: If one follows an incorrect meditation method and has little merit, no matter how much effort is exerted, significant progress will not be made. In severe cases, if one carries heavy negative karma, improper meditation may even lead to psychological disturbances and psychosis.

With Great Merit: If one follows an incorrect method yet possesses great merit, they may still achieve some meditative experiences. However, this can be dangerous to Buddhism and fellow practitioners. When individuals attain results through improper techniques, they may begin teaching based on their own experiences, spreading flawed methods that mislead others. Those with little merit who follow such incorrect approaches will eventually fail, deplete their merit, or even suffer psychological disturbances.

While practitioners may employ different meditation techniques, it is ultimately merit that determines their ability to anchor and focus the mind. Those who lack merit, especially those burdened by negative karma, will not attain true meditative depth, regardless of whether their practice is correct or incorrect. However, for those who are fortunate enough to follow the correct method, persistence, patience, and continuous merit-making will eventually cultivate the inner strength needed to develop deep meditative absorption.
