Questions
How can you calmly sleep so far away?
Say in the night I wake and need you,
how then could you save me?
For I have searched and kept my eyes so wide they hurt with staring. Still I see
no other place in all the world, no room for me. I strained that you might gently take my hand. I cried that you might smile.
I paid my dues in love a thousand times to find all that I prize, yes, even you,
as mortal as I.
This morning, was I not born again,
and did I not call your face
and the rising sun the same?
This evening, was I not reduced to ‘Whatsizzname’ and am I not dead?
Except, no tomb could be as cold
as this my bed. This poem, ‘Questions’, the second poem in the series to be read by Robin Wheeler, is available with other episodes on #AnchorFM, #Spotify and other podcast platforms.
