Dr. Jamal Badawi is a long-time NCCM/CAIR CAN board member, a co-founder of the Muslim American Society. He has also served on the Shura Council of the Islamic Society of North America – which is famous - or infamous depending on your point of view - for having one of its charities busted for funding terrorism. The Islamic society of North America is also noted for being an unindicted Co conspirator in a terrorism funding trial in America..

Former ISNA president Muzzamil Siddiqi, for example, said in a 2004 fatwa that a husband could have recourse to “light disciplinary action in order to correct the moral infraction of his wife.”

Back to Dr Badawi . Like Qaradawi, he approves of the practice of wife beating for purposes of maintaining discipline and falls back on the belief that men oversee women because they spend their resources to support them. The verse in the Quran that he refers to is Surat An-Nisā' (The Women) 4:34.

• “Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.”

Dr. Badawi also thinks women are unfit to fill leadership roles simply because they are female. According to him:

“According Islam women unfit by nature to lead because they undergo various physiological and psychological changes during their monthly periods and pregnancies.”

Funny question for Dr Badawi: If an unemployed muslim guy is married to a muslim women who is working, is it OK for her to beat him if he is not being Muslim enough and straying from the faith? Can muslims wives beat their deadbeat husbands? Hey there Dr Badawi – inquiring minds want to know.
