Antonelli won in Austin and still couldnāt clinch the title. This week we get into why.
He took pole, got a flying start while Verstappen fumbled his, and controlled the race with a one-stop strategy for his ninth win of the season. Leclerc charged late for second, Verstappen took third, and Hamilton missed the podium by a single second after a Virtual Safety Car froze the race just as he was closing in.
We talk through what Mercedes got right, whether Ferrariās two-stop was a mistake or just bad luck, and why Russellās eighth place is the only thing stopping the champagne. Antonelli is 123 points clear with 125 left, so Mexico looks like a coronation. We also look at what it all means for the title fight.
Verstappen hadn't won all season. Then Malaysia happened. The race got delayed 90 minutes before it even started; rain hit Sepang, there were two safety cars, and half the field was guessing when to switch tyres. Through all of it, Verstappen came out on top for his first win of 2026.
The bigger story might be Russell, though. He was running third, in podium contention, and didn't even finish. His title hopes are in real trouble now. Antonelli just had to get through the race and took second, stretching his lead to 84 points. Hamilton grabbed his first podium since Silverstone after a rough start.
I'll admit I went into this race expecting another Antonelli story after Monza. Instead, he was starting 16th after crashing in qualifying; Piastri and Norris both had miserable days, and it was Russell ā not the championship leader ā who came out on top after holding Verstappen off in one of the tightest finishes this sport has seen in decades. Let's get into it!
What a terrible weekend that was for F1, with the first-ever race at the Madring in Madrid! Only 9 more years of this, am I right, guys!
Let's get into it!
Antonelli started 19th. He won the race. At his home Grand Prix. I still don't fully believe it. I've watched a lot of F1 races and I don't say this lightly Monza just gave us one of the great drives. Antonelli takes an engine penalty, gets buried at the back of the grid, and somehow ends up standing on top of the podium three hours later, in front of the Tifosi, as the first Italian to win at Monza since 1966.
And it wasn't even simple once he got to the front. He had to take the win off his own teammate, George Russell, with the title race hanging in the balance. Meanwhile, Ferrari, at their own home race watched Leclerc go straight into the barriers on lap two.
As we bid farewell to ZandVoort, we also see absolute carnage out on track with Max out of his home race on lap 2 and silly season signings over the summer break, F1 is back, ladies and gents!
