A few months after Putin took office from an ailing Boris Yeltsin, the huge Russian submarine Kursk sank on August 12, 2000 in the Barents Sea. None of its 118 sailors survived.
It electrified the previously lethargic Russian population. Russian nationalist opinion came to life. The Russian military blamed the Americans, with some reason. Today, most of the Russian public agrees, now that so much as been declassified. It remains a live issue in Russia even now.
As always, the media reports were incorrect, often invented and served only to damage Russia's reputation. While piecing together a rational version of events is difficult, it is not impossible
