In mid-2017 talks between the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities and the three guarantor powers (Greece, Turkey, UK) to reach a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus issue collapsed. Christos Ellinides (Deputy Director-General for DGT) and Jean-François Drevet (regional policy expert and retired EU official) discuss the reasons why no agreement was reached and the roles of the main stakeholders within the broader geopolitical context. What is the current situation in Cyprus, a divided island and fully fledged EU Member State and under what conditions might the issue be settled? How does the EU facilitate the process of reaching an agreement and help the two communities on the island to come together? Could the off-shore gas exploration in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus be a game changer? Lastly, Mr Ellinides and Mr Devret discuss language issues on the island.
