* A three-judge federal panel ruled that Texas cannot use the GOP-drawn redistricting map for the 2026 midterm elections, claiming it was "racially gerrymandered".

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott had signed the new map into law in August, projecting up to five additional House seats for the Republican Party.

The ruling, featuring a 2-1 decision, saw a judge appointed by President Donald Trump and a judge appointed by former President Obama concur.

A judge appointed by former President Ronald Reagan dissented.

The judges cited substantial evidence suggesting racial gerrymandering and required Texas to use its 2021 map during the 2026 midterms.

Civil rights organizations argued that the map weakens minority voters' influence, violating the federal Voting Rights Act and the US Constitution.

The Texas case may proceed to the Supreme Court.

Concurrently, California voters passed Proposition 50, leading to the DOJ suing California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Secretary of State Shirley Weber over a map projected to create up to five additional Democratic House seats.
