Radiohead — Identikit (2012 version) — Recreated from the 2016 studio recording

Listen Later

This is a studio recreation of the 2012 early live version of Identikit by Radiohead.

Why?

The studio version of Identikit released in 2016 on A Moon Shaped Pool was quite different from the first live version played in 2012 during the King of Limbs tour. Changes included:

  • Ed's backing voice "want to see you and I need to" was replaced by the "a moon shaped pool, dancing clothes" part
  • the drum machine played by Phil in the live version was removed
  • a gap was added between the first verse and the "broken heart" section
  • the key change between the verses and the "broken heart" section was removed
  • a choir was added on the synth part
  • a guitar solo was added at the end
  • I'm not debating whether these changes are good or not, everyone has their own opinion about them. Let's just say that I was disappointed by the removal of the key change but was delighted by the guitar solo.

    What did I do?

Basically, I tried to get as close as possible to the 2012 live version using the 2016 studio recording. The only part I couldn't quite get was Ed's backing voice, but all the other parts I mentioned are brought back!

    How?

It's explained in the video, just turn the subtitles on. The softwares I used:

    • Ardour for mixing
    • Rubber Band Stereo Pitch Shifter
    • Demucs for track separation
    • If you don't feel like installing Demucs, can also try it for free on some websites like this one.
