A young swimmer from Gauteng will take on the grueling Island Escape swim from Robben Island to Big Bay, as she attempts to raise funds for the South African Bone Marrow Registry.
Twenty-nine-year-old Christine Roos, who will be participating in the challenge for the first time, aims to raise R50 000 through her BackaBuddy initiative. The funds raised will be directed to the SABMR’s Patient Assistance Programme, that assists families who cannot cover the cost associated with the finding a suitable donor and or the life-saving treatment.
Every year, thousands of people with leukaemia, other blood diseases, and immune disorders reach a point where the only possible cure–and their only chance for survival–is a bone marrow transplant. It is for this reason that the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) was founded in 1991.
