The BAFTA or the British Academy of Film and Television Arts is one of the most acclaimed awards in the world following the Oscars. They convene every year to award the very best of British TV and Film and also have a category for international work apart from the usual awards given in multiple categories. The BAFTA’s were in the spotlight this year when Indian actor Adarsh Gourav was nominated for the movie The White Tiger, an adaptation of the Arvind Adiga novel of the same name.
The BAFTAs were established in 1949 with the Television Awards being introduced in 1955. This year’s awards ceremony are set to be conducted in June and the nominees were originally announced 4 days ago on the 28th of April. The event is set to be hosted for the 2nd year in a row by British comedian Richard Ayoade.
The nominee list for the 2021 Awards cannot be changed as the cut off date for the program to be aired was January 8th 2021 whereas Rajdeep’s performance was on the 2nd of May 2021. Although not for 2021, he is considered to be the frontrunner for the 2022 Awards. According to our source, it seems that the performance displayed by the Indian TV News anchor was just too good to be ignored in any scenario. This would also be the first time that a non-British performance is being entered into the race as a Wild Card entry.
Rajdeep Sardesai is a 55-year-old veteran of Indian journalism and has worked with Times of India, NDTV, CNN-IBN and India Today in his 33-year long career. His father Dilip Sardesai was a former test cricketer and Rajdeep is married to fellow senior journalist Sagarika Ghose. He was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award by India in 2008.
His editorial views have always come under the radar with Rajdeep shifting between pro-establishment and anti-establishment based on the current trends within the country. He is also the favourite of meme makers in India whenever they want to emphasise the failure of the Indian media. He has been overtaken by the editor of Republic TV and the loudest voice in Indian television, Arnab Goswami, of late.
Rajdeep has also been controversial, with him being taken off air multiple times and also having numerous FIRs filed against him by police departments of various Indian states for propagating unverified news leading to a collapse in the law and order situation in those states. He has also been on the receiving end of physical assault like public slappings and also rebukes from the people whom he interviews.
