Sitting #15 - The Zakaah.


The obligation of zakaah is established in the Quran, Sunnah and ijmaa' (consensus).

Zakaah is obligatory on four things:

  1. That which emerges from the earth (crops).
  2. Cattle (specifically camels, cows, sheep and goats).
  3. Gold, silver and paper currency.
  4. What is held with the intention of selling (stock).

    5. The nisaab (threshold) for each of the four categories, and the amount that must be paid once the threshold has been reached.

    The things zakaah is not obligatory upon.
