They are divided into eight categories as per ayah 60 of Surat al-Tawba.

The poor

The needy.

Those employed for it.

The ones whos hearts are to be one over.

Freeing slaves/prisoners.

Those who are burdened with debt.

For jihaad in the path of Allah.

The wayfarer (stranded traveler).
