Members Reviews:
A sea and land adventure.
Lord Ramage seems to be ever getting the 'short end of the stick' from his superior officers with his assignments. Non-the-less, he always seems to figure it out and come up 'smelling like a rose' to those very same admirals, though they will never admit it. He once again is placed into an actual historical event along the Spanish Main on the Island of Curacao, where his ability to 'fathom' out successful plans against an enemy secures himself, his crew, and all those under his command, a victory for Great Britain. His struggles start at sea but end on land. A good adventure. JC
Quick and entertaining read
Very entertaining read. I have now read most of this series and continue to enjoy them. They are not a detailed or as filled-out as O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin series, but still a fun read.
Just as good the 2nd time
I*m reading the Ramage series for the second time and find it as riveting as the first. It has been a few years since I first met this sailor. Although Pope gets a little repetitious at times, when you read the series. I would suggest you read them in order. Pope knows sailing, so you might need a guide to the terms he uses, but it really isn't a necessity. The stories are varied and though fiction it does give you an insight into the life of a sailor in 1800's. Reading on my old Kindle does cause one problem in that you can not enlarge the maps at the beginning of the books. The writing
does put you in the middle of the action. Even though I have read the stories before, I found his writing kept my interest. I am no sailor. I get seasick just looking at the ocean, but these stories, even the second time, kept my interest.
Fast-paced sailing adventure in the Islands
Ramage, whose name originates from the French meaning, a musical melody by the birds - or less aptly put, bird-song, Volume 9, is a fast-paced sailing adventure in the Islands of the Caribbean about the quickstep evolving analysis and action of a naval Captain involving bloody privateers, a greedy Admiral of the Blue, an Island Governor going back on his word, and, Wow(!), You Can't Put This Book Down(!), and you are reaching for the next book in the series saying, "Did I just finish that?!"
Misplaced history
This novel, written as No. 9 in the series, is based on historical events occurring in 1800. It follows No. 6 (Ramage & the Guillotine) which seemed to be set in 1801, and is one of the sequels to No. 7 (Ramage's Diamond) which seems to be set historically in 1804. Dudley Pope seemed to have a major problem setting his later novels in proper historical order. Readers continuing the series should be aware of that problem. The novels must be read in numerical order for development of Ramage's career, love life, etc., but after No. 7 they seem to drop back to circa 1799 and then progress forward again to 1804. Among other things, the series puts the frigate Calypso in continuous service with the same crew from circa 1799 to 1805.
