A great book by my favorite historical nautical writer
There are a few historical nautical fiction writers of whom I am a big fan. Of those writers, Dudley Pope is my favorite. Ramage's Devil is set during the Napoleonic era. It is well written and uses the peace time between the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars effectively. I never summarize a book in my reviews, in this book's case you'll be pleased to read it to make your own, but I'll point out a few details that impressed me. Ramage always goes for the most advantageous military solution to every problem. He's never half way in. With five people, four Frenchmen and his new wife, he decides to capture a mutinied British brig and rescue the loyal seamen that's been brought into the harbor where he's honeymooning in France when war breaks out again. Not exactly the easy way home and a dangerous choice. His French friend is being transported to a prison island and he decides to rescue him. Not an easy or probable task. He makes the right choices no matter how difficult or personally challenging. I loved what Pope did with the Vice-Admiral Clinton character. I like the way he portrayed his thinking and his line of questioning along with his decisiveness. Pope doesn't make everyone who isn't a main character weak and blundering. The climax is worth getting to and show's Pope's true ability in thinking about all the things I as reader am concerned with, all the questions I ask. You can tell he tries to answer the reader's questions in a thoughtful and entertaining way. The end is satisfying and the whole book is worth your time. I recommend going to the beginning of the series if you're just finding Dudley Pope and his Ramage series. You'll be entertained and it is well worth the price.
Quick and entertaining read
Very entertaining read. I have now read most of this series and continue to enjoy them. They are not a detailed or as filled-out as O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin series, but still a fun read.
More of the same
Once again, Pope feels it necessary to explain the intricacies of anchoring a ship. There is way too much explanation of the processes of ship handling, while Ramage once again anchors safely in an enemy port and captures yet more frigates without firing more than a few shots from his guns; once more, none of his faithful followers are harmed. The Ramage series is full of improbable situations: None of his officers are ever injured, none of them ever get promoted, he makes do with a single midshipman who is an accomplished seaman in spite of the fact that he is somewhere between fourteen and sixteen years old, he retains command of the Calypso seemingly forever, he almost never actually fights a ship-to-ship action, and he never makes a mistake or guesses wrong. His tricks and subterfuges are starting to wear thin.
