Quick and entertaining read
Quick and entertaining read. Not as detailed as O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin series.
A different sea story
I love stories of the royal navy in the sailing days. The author always has an extra twist beyond the normal stuff. It is great
Pope's Strength
Having read all of Hornblower and all of Bolitho, I can say they got a bit formulaic. Pope is refreshing. Specifically, he uses the story to explain the workings of not just ships, but of society of the time, of commerce from the inside, of various trades. It's like taking a tour of those times with a great guide AND a great story.
Each novel has taken on a different aspect of life and times. Am now reading Ramage #6 and intend to buy them all.
And for those wondering--yes, he does explore ships and seamanship with an insider's eye. He notes all manner of things about this that are not found in Hornblower or Bolitho series. You won't get bored.
Ramage faces the unexpected.
Dudley Pope takes an unusual twist and turn from the usual predicaments of the war with the French. He deals with massive fraud and treachery within the Postal Packet service. Along with the mystery of just what is going on, there is a mutiny during which he is faced with tough decisions to save his beloved which was taken as a hostage by the mutineers. A very refreshing mix of the expected and the unexpected. A refreshing surprise.

The best of the Ramage tales so far...
I really liked the details of the workings of the 18th century British government and society. As always, I was struck by the vibrant descriptions of the coastlines from the sea. A great read.
