Members Reviews:
Small scale Naval "history".
I have read 10 of the Lord Ramage books in chronological order. This is my 11th. I have always liked books on Naval Life in the English navy during the Napoleonic Wars and have read C.S. Forester umpteen times. Pope is good (though I will give my preference to Forester) and has strengths (and weaknesses) that Forester doesn't.
Pope's characters are more real, more animated, more human. But his biggest fault is his plagiarizing of himself. Every book has a description of the capstan, the slow match tubs, the setting and reefing of the sails, how the sextants work etc. It is a very lazy way of writing.
Like Forester, his plots involve mostly small ship actions. Hornblower, Forester's hero, misses all of the great battles of the era. He is not at the "Glorious 1st of June", nor Cape St Vincent, Copenhagen , the Nile or Trafalgar. Ramage is at St. Vincent but in a 60 ft. ketch, hence not in the main battle. In book #16 he is "at Trafalgar" but I can't tell you in what role having not read the book yet. This is a disappointment to me leaving the excitement to be generated by jail escapes, treasure hunts and other "asides".
I will finish the series but if you are starting out, and like me, like BIG battles you are in for a disappointment. In the 18 book series, Trafalgar is #16. That's a long time to wait.
Quick and entertaining read
Very entertaining read. I have now read most of this series and continue to enjoy them. They are not a detailed or as filled-out as O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin series, but still a fun read.
A story of cunning and bravado.
Ramage and his crew find themselves in the Mediterranean Sea on a strange and different mission to raise havoc against the French. They sail alone and disrupt French activities as they find them. The most interesting part of this story is how Dudley Pope describes in great detail, the French network of coastal signal stations from Spain to France and how they were used to provide information up and down the line concerning the war with England. The story involves several sub plots along the way but ultimately manages to pull off an incredible and significant action against the French. JC Yuill
