RBS Hammond started caring for unemployed people in inner Sydney during the Great Depression. Known as a 'Mender of Broken Men', he was also a committed social reformer who aimed to restore hope, dignity and self-esteem to the destitute. He promoted affordable housing for Sydney's unemployed.
