Where to start? How about with the Haudenosaunee.
Without much direction as to where I can find a clear historical path, I take from my library Iroquoia: The Development of a Native World by William Engelbrecht (an archaeology and anthropology book). From here, I get the basics of the past down in order to understand the present nations that fall under the haudenosaunee umbrella; some of which are amazing things, good and bad.
