Paul writes because he is concerned the relatively new Christians in Thessalonika will be discouraged due to their intense persecution. He compares what they are going through to the unbelieving Jews in Jerusalem killing Christ and the prophets, so we know it was serious. He draws a clear distinction between this persecution and the wrath of God, which the Thessalonian Christians can be sure they are delivered from. He also clears up some concerns about believers who have died, declaring that all believers in Jesus Christ, dead or alive, will be caught up to meet him in the air.
