In this episode the kingdom was taken away from Saul because he did not wait on God. Samuel had given Saul specific instructions. Saul took matters into his own hands. What can we learn from this lesson? That we have to be patient and wait on God. We must learn to put it in God’s hands and watch how He takes care of our situation. In this episode, Saul is officially made king, Saul successfully defeats the Ammonites proving that God is with him, and Samuel gives his farewell address. One thing I want us to notice in this lesson is the awesome grace and mercy of God. The Israelites were going against God’s will for them at this time when they demanded a king. They were basically rejecting God who had been their only King. Even though they had messed up, God still promised that He would not reject or abandon them and that all would be well if they continued to worship and acknowledge Him (11:12). Every morning when we wake up we have that same mercy and grace. If we messed up terribly yesterday, today we can get up, ask God to forgive us (as well as others we might have offended), dust ourselves off and get back to doing God’s work. In this episode from 1 Samuel 8:6 - 10:16, we read about how Saul meets Samuel and how Samuel anointed him. One take away from this lesson was in Chapter 10:7 when Samuel told Saul that God was with him. It is a powerful thing to know God is with you. When we know that God is with us it makes us a powerful force to deal with. When we know God is with us, we can stand (even if we are the only ones in the room standing for Jesus.) One take away from this lesson is the power of repentance. When the Israelites were led to revival and repentance by Samuel they got God’s attention and won the battle. Sometimes we might not see victory because there are some things we need to repent of. Let’s make sure we are not holding up our victory because we continue to practice sin. In the episode we read about the judgement that fell on Eli’s family. Eli as well as his two evil sons all died. His daughter in law dies in childbirth and the Ark of the Covenant is taken by the Philistines. We also read about the plagues God sent to the Philistines for stealing the ark.One thing we should learn from this lesson is that God should not be just a token for us to display. If we are displaying bumper stickers about God, and T-shirts with Godly messages on them… we need to live a life that reflects what that T-shirt or bumper sticker says.
