Hello and welcome to Beauty – the no-frills, no-nonsense podcast about all things beauty. True beauty. God’s beauty. I am your host and Lemongrass Spa consultant, Deanna, and I am super pumped for this message today.

I was in Numbers for my bible reading and I knew I had to share this with you because it is one of my most favorite reminders in the bible – and clearly a reminder I needed as I wrestle with some decisions of my own. Do you ever struggle to know what God wants you to do? I struggle with timing in a big way. When I get an idea, it is like full-steam ahead! And often, once I have jumped in and gotten wet, I realize I messed up. I should have stayed with the idea a little longer and let it linger in my heart as I took it to God to see what he’d have me do with it. I’d like to say I have gotten better, but some days that water is still too tempting and I just jump.  

I would love to know if you hear the same message when you read this passage of scripture. So, you know the drill – press pause, grab your bible and read Numbers 9:15-23. I have also linked this scripture at the bottom.

Okay, so let’s just review real quick what is going on. This passage of scripture is about the history of the cloud, which is the presence of God. Once the tabernacle was finished being set up, the cloud would rest upon it and at night, the cloud became fire. This was how the people would know God was there among them. So here we have our first reminder to always look for God.

Now, what would happen was that when the cloud or fire lifted, the people were to move their camp, so there is this element of standing guard and always being ready while in the wait. I get anxious just saying that. I am a person who likes to do one or the other – rest or move. Not rest and be ready to move. Not move and get ready to wait. That is constant tension in my book, and yet this is how God chose to get the people to the land he promised them. Slowly and deliberately.

What does that tell you about waiting? To me, it shows God values the wait. He wants us to rest and lean in. I have found that there is often something God has to teach me or reveal to me as I wait. If I was moving, I might miss the message. We lose nothing and gain everything while we wait on God. We need to learn to sit still and be content in the wait – but we also have to be ready to move. And there is uncertainty in both. How long will I wait? Where will I move to? Will he command me in the middle of the night? What if I miss it? Will I have time to gather everything? Will I have strength to keep moving? Being ready for God's next command and stepping forth in obedience is the place in the middle. The place where he wants us to be - whether we are resting or moving. It is the place where we don't need answers and we just stand ready to receive and accept the next move. 

I love this passage of scripture because it teaches us how God takes care of us – and the formula is simple. We only need to follow his directions, moving and resting at his command. What is he telling you right now?

Let’s pray:

God, we love the way you move in our lives and we thank you for being an all-knowing God who takes great care in providing for us. Help us to be ready, Lord, and to obey your command to move or rest.
