Sometimes the truth is worse than what we have imagined and sometimes there's proof of that. The Cold War inspired countless strange and even dangerous government projects that only came to light years after the projects were shutdown. The new series on Netflix, "Stranger Things" has been partially inspired by some of these real government projects.
