I just started rereading Stephen King's The Stand, & his Author's Note got me thinking about the role geographical locations have played in my work. I discuss whether I think one needs to have actually been to the places one writes about, and recommend resources that can help writers portray their real-life settings more accurately. I also explain where I think taking artistic license--which often includes making places up--is appropriate.
