Now, before we begin, let’s take a moment to just sit quietly.

Close your eyes

* What can you hear?

* Do you hear the birds chirping or the traffic roaring by?

* Can you hear a baby laughing or a jackhammer pounding outside your window?

* What kind of chair are you sitting in?

* Is it soft and comfy?

* A hard kitchen chair?

* Perhaps your bed, the floor?

Let’s begin

* Breathe slowly in through your nose….. three, two, one

* And out through your mouth….. three, two, one

* And in through your nose….. three, two, one

* And out through your mouth…. three, two, one

* One more time….

* In through your nose…. three, two, one

* And out through your mouth….. three, two, one

Raise your arms high above your head

* Reach for the sky

* Wiggle your fingers

* Wiggle your toes

Bring your arms around and give yourself a big hug

* Switch arms and give yourself another big hug

* Take a deep breath in

And WHOOSH it all out

Real talk 2

One thing I know for sure H.R.

Not HR as in human resources, but H.R. as in hope and resilience.

Now, if you’ve been following along in my newsletter or podcast, we’ve been talking a lot about the future. About being human as we evolve with AI, about getting ready for the future, about being ready for the future, about not caring about the future, and all the emotions and angst that come with that.

So, today is me leaning in further. The kind where I don’t pretend I’ve got it all figured out. Because I don’t. I’m still in the messy middle, same as you.

But there’s something that’s been growing in me, quietly, and I want to share it with you, because I think it might be the most hopeful thing I know.

We have been talking all season and using metaphors to paint pictures.

A drop of water

The small moments where you choose humanity.

The tiny pond you move in. Then we talked about your soil, tending your own nervous system so something can grow.

We talked about staying awake, about agency and sovereignty.

About not surrendering the parts of us that make us human.

And all of that is true. All of those matter.

But, today I want to widen the lens.

Because here’s the thing I keep coming back to.

You were never meant to do this alone.

One person carrying the whole weight of the future on their own shoulders, that’s not hope.

That’s exhaustion.

That’s the thing that whispers, what’s the point?

I’m just one person, what difference can I possibly make?

And I understand that whisper. I’ve stood in it.

But, it’s only telling you half the story.

Because you are not just one drop, you are one drop among countless others who are, right now, today, choosing the same thing you’re choosing.

Think about it

A single drop of water doesn’t change a landscape, but a drop of water is not alone.

It falls, joins another, and another.

Somewhere along the way those drops become a trickle, and the trickle becomes a stream, and the stream becomes a river, and the river, given enough time, carves canyons through solid rock.

A single drop didn’t do that.

They did it together.

And not one of them knew, as it fell, that it was part of something that could move mountains.

That’s us!

This is what I want you to hear today.

When you choose kindness in your pond, and somebody on the other side of the world, somebody you’ll never meet, chooses kindness in theirs, those choices are not separate.

They are the same current, the ripples join.

I said that back in the first episode of season 5.

And I’ll say it again, because it’s the heart of everything.

The ripples join.

They always join.

Especially the ones you never see.

And this is where it stops being some kind of fantasy and starts being honestly, the most realistic thing I can tell you about the future.

The future is not handed down to us from governments, the powerful, the big tech companies, or from the people who seem to be steering the ship.

Of course, they influence society and have a responsibility, but today the impact I want you to focus on is not about them.

The future is built, little by little

• By what ordinary people normalize.

• By what we practice.

• By what we protect.

By how millions of us, quietly, in kitchens and offices and bus stops in the pouring rain, decide to treat one another. That is not a small force.

That is the force.

We just forget it’s ours.

Let me put it another way.

Remember the candle

You light one candle from your hope flame that burns inside you, no matter how dim it feels.

And they light one candle.

They each light one other person’s candle, now there are 4 plus yours.

An infinite number of flames can come from your single light, and not one of them dims yours.

Think about this… one candle in a dark room, that helps.

* You can see your own hands.

* But a thousand candles?

* A thousand candles change the room itself.

* It changes what’s possible in that room.

People who were stumbling can suddenly see each other.

That’s the difference between one and many.

That’s the difference between you matter and collectively we are powerful.

This is why it matters more than any one of us can imagine.

The world has changed, fundamentally changed, and it’s going to keep changing faster than any one of us can keep up with on our own.

None of us can hold it all.

None of us can adapt all alone.

And we don’t have to.

A community adapts in a way no single person can

• One person notices what’s coming.

• Another knows how to respond.

• Another holds the door open for the ones who are struggling.

So, no one is left behind.

That is the important part to pay attention to.

We have to hold the door open.

That’s people choosing humanity.

Not one hero.

Human beings holding each other steady while the ground shifts.

That is how we survive what’s coming.

Together, or not very well at all.

Now, I want to say something directly to you, because real talk means seeing you as you actually are, not as a crowd.

I know we are not all carrying the same load.

The playing field is not level.

Some of you are listening from a place of relative ease today.

And some of you are facing things every single day that I will never fully understand.

• Violence

• Systemic injustice.

• And many other life events.

We are not all in the same situation, and I’m not going to stand here and pretend we are.

* I see you

* Each one of you

* Not the crowd, you

And what I’m about to say, I’m saying to each and every one of you, right in your life, right now.

I have an enormous dream that I keep coming back to, and I’m going to keep repeating it out loud.

I want us to collectively and collaboratively build a Community Voice for Humanity full of Hope.

* Not a loud movement.

* Not a polished one with slogans and stages.

Just people, choosing in small steady ways to lean into their humanity, and then finding each other.

And I would love for you to join us.

You can start right here and, in your community, where you are.

As we build a Community Voice for Humanity and take it into our homes, places of work and communities.

Our communities will ripple outward and join.

We can face the future with hope and possibility, using our agency and sovereignty to tilt the future in a more human direction.

I can’t do that by myself.

That’s the whole point.

I was never supposed to.

And neither were you.

Our practice this season has been three words.

Pause, notice, choose.

Today I want to keep those words and add one more layer, the collective layer.

Pause

When the whisper comes, the one that says you’re just one person and it’s pointless, just pause.

breath. That’s enough.

Notice

Say quietly to yourself, I am not alone in this.

Because you’re not.

Right now, while you’re listening, there are people all over the world choosing the exact same thing you’re trying to choose.

Notice that you are part of something already in motion.

Choose to lean in.

This week, choose with ‘us’ in mind.

Ask yourself, not just how do I want to show up, but who can I do this with?

Whose candle can I light?

Who lit mine?

Reach toward one person this week.

One

Join your drop to theirs on purpose. (I realize that I am really stretching the metaphor here… lol)

That’s how a community starts.

Not with a grand plan, with two human beings deciding to face the future side by side instead of alone.

As we close, I want to leave you with something.

Not a task, just a noticing.

See if you can catch one moment this week where you feel small, where the future feels too big and you feel too little to matter.

And in that moment, pause, and remember the river.

Remember that you have never once been a single drop falling alone.

You are part of a current that is already moving, already joining, already carving something new.

You don’t have to be the whole river.

You just have to choose, and trust that the others are also rippling outwards.

Because they are.

I promise you, they are.

Humanity is still a choice. Let’s choose it together.
