We've been talking about listening for the past episodes. So, here's a question for you: have you ever listened to an all-English language podcast?

Today, we talk about using English language content as background music.
This helps conditions our ears to the rhythm and melody that is inherent in this language. Turn on - and leave on- your TV - there's so much conversation that is on TV.
When we're learning a new language, ANY chance for us to be immersed in that language, is a huge opportunity for us. We talked about active and passive listening, there is power in both.
The double-edged sword about correct pronunciation and listening is that when we fail to listen, we fail to recognize words - even in their correct form, because in our minds, we lodged a pronunciation that is incorrect, which blinds us to the words we actually already know, which is both pity and danger.

Many listeners say they can't understand "words that are connected together, "lian yin". A visual equivalent is a bit like handwriting vs print, when we only recognize text in print from, we have a hard time when the same text is written in a script font. This is why we have to expose our ears to the "script" fonts. To really use this as our background music, and never waste an opportunity for our ears to be showered by the right sounds.
In addition to listening to words we know, we also have to listen to questions, as these are all very directional, and the questions are always important.
很多听众表示，他们听不懂“连音”——这可以用一种视觉类比来解释：就像手写字和打印字的区别。当我们只能识别打印体的文字时，当同样的文字以手写体出现时，我们就很难辨认。这就是为什么我们必须让耳朵接触到“手写体”一样的语言。这也是为什么我们要把这种语言当作背景音乐，让耳朵不断被正确的发音浸润。

1. Turn on the radio, podcast, or TV, and actively listen without break, for 20 minutes.
2. Write down all the words you picked out.
3. Then, continue listening as you move on to other tasks in your life, but keep it on as background music.
